The owner of Classic Carriage Works, LLC. is a lifelong Charlestonian and approaches the carriage industry with an eye on the craftsmanship and pride of a time past. One of the Southeast's premiere Carriage Works, Classic Carriage specializes in the construction and restoration of 19th and 20th century carriages, wagons, and surreys. At our warehouse and workshop, we make a unique contribution to our city's history by building the very carriages that carry you along the streets of our Historic District. We take a tremendous amount of pride in our work. While you are in town, come by our stable to visit and enjoy a tour that is crafted with the same attention to detail we put into our restorations.

Our Horses Classic Carriage horses

Our award winning Percheron Draft Horses are South Carolina and Georgia State Grand Champions in nearly every hitch category. The Classic Carriage six horse hitch is a fixture in local parades and horse shows and an impressive display of precision and power. Our Percherons are the city's best-trained horses, and the same precision that has made them Champion show horses ensures you a safe and enjoyable ride. Classic Carriage keeps alive a 300 year tradition of horse-drawn transportation and maintains superior facilities both in the city and at pasture to ensure that our animals remain healthy and happy.

Group Tours

"Standard"

Our regular fares are $22 for Adults (age 12 and older) and $14 for Children (ages 4-11). Unlike some other tour companies, these fares already include the $2 per person fees/taxes that must be paid to the City of Charleston. We do offer Special Discounted Fares for advance reservations. When you call to make your reservations, fares for Adults are $20 and Children are $14! If you make reservations online, you save an additional $1 off each ticket! Children three and under ride free, but will be required to sit on a lap. You certainly have the option of purchasing them a seat at the children's rate. Payment must be made in advance to qualify for the discounted rates. Our standard tours depart about every 30 minutes throughout the day, but the actual times frameshift. When you make a reservation, choose a time that you can check in 30 minutes prior to. You will be scheduled on the tour that goes out within 30 minutes on either side of the time you have chosen. We guarantee our reservations. If your tour does not depart within the +/- 30 minute time frame, and you have checked in at least 30 minutes prior, we will refund you 100% and still give you our tour.

"Early Bird Special"

Fares for our 9:30am group tour, if booked online and paid for by credit card, are $17 for adults and $10 for children. This tour departs at 9:30am sharp, 7 days a week, March 1st - January 1st. Reservations should be made at least 2 days in advance. There are only 16 seats available per day on the Early Bird Special. This tour is very popular and can book solid days in advance so please reserve accordingly.

"Adult Passengers Only (APO)"

This tour departs at 10:00am sharp, 7 days a week, March 1st - January 1st, and is restricted to adult passengers only, 18 years old and up. Children are certainly welcome on all of our other tours, even at this same time, but per customer requests we have excluded them from 1 tour per day. Our APO tour is also very popular, and can book solid weeks in advance, especially on weekend days. The fare for this tour is $19 and must be booked online and paid for by credit card in advance. You must also specify "APO" in the "Comments or Questions" field of the reservation form.

"Civil War Tour"

2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. To commemorate these events, Classic Carriage is proud to offer a Civil War carriage tour. This one hour tour will give you an in-depth look at Charleston during the War Between the States. Learn about Charleston's pivotal role in this great conflict, including the signing of the Ordinance of Secession, the firing on the Star of the West, the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, the devastating fire of 1861, the heroic actions of Robert Smalls, the use of ironclads and torpedoes, the horrific combat of the Morris Island campaign, the 54th Massachusetts and their charge on Battery Wagner, the bombardment of the city by Union artillery, the tragic fate of the H. L. Hunley, and the destructive march of William Tecumseh Sherman through South Carolina. Union forces spent years trying to penetrate Charleston's defenses, both by land and by sea, resulting in the longest sustained campaign of the Civil War, and the longest siege in American history. Our guides, experts in local history, will provide you with a better understanding of these events, from specific battles to daily life in the city, from soldier to citizen. Covering events from Secession to Reconstruction, this tour will give you a comprehensive look at and better understanding of the events that many locals refer to simply as the War.

Our Civil War tour is available Thursday-Sunday at 11:00 am from March 1st - December 31st and private tours on other days and/or at other times are also available by reservation only.

Ticket prices are $22 for Adults (12 and older) and $14 for Children (11 and under).

When booking, you must choose 11am as your tour time and note “CW Tour” in the comments section of the form. Otherwise, we will book you for a standard tour.

Online Discounts, coupons, and other promotions do not apply to the Civil War Tour.

Private Tours

Private tours are available by reservation only. They are available 7 days a week at the following times: 9am, 10:20am, 11:40am, 1:00pm, 2:20pm, 3:40pm (the last one during Eastern Standard Time) and 5:00pm (the last one during Daylight Savings Time). Our regular fares for private tours are based on the number of people and are as follows: $110 for 2, and then $15 for each additional person ($125 for 3, and $140 for 4, etc.). We offer a $10 discount for private tours when booked from our web site. The tour must be paid for in advance to qualify for the discount. Our private tours are conducted in a Vis-a-Vis carriage. It has 2 seats that are each 43 inches wide. Some pickup locations can be arranged at an additional cost of $25. Please check our Reservation FAQs for help with common questions. If you still need assistance, want to check the availability before booking, or have a group larger than our Vis-a-Vis will accommodate but still want a private tour, call or email for information.
